Typical CV sector scams

The most common scam is people and companies setting themselves up as “professionals” without the experience, knowledge and creative writing talent to create a CV to even reasonable professional standards – let alone top-quality standard!

Both surprisingly and worryingly, this kind of thing is rife, and would-be CV sector players from one-man-bands in a bedroom to large companies miraculously transform from simple laymen one day to “top CV UK professionals” the next. It’s very easy for them to pin the label of ‘expert’ on their site. After all, it is just a word. But of course, when it comes to actually living up to their own hype, this is a completely different animal. So much so that they can’t! …So they don’t! However, this doesn’t stop trusting clients from falling prey and paying good money for a second-rate service!

Naturally, many of these smaller businesses fall by the wayside over time, but some with financial backing, fantastical claims and persuasive salespeople continue to thrive.

In some sectors they probably wouldn’t get away with it, but in the CV writing sector, sadly, they do. Discover why here.

Lies, damned lies and statistics

You’ve all heard the famous ‘lies, damned lies and statistics’ quotation, and everyone knows that unverifiable statistics can be invented and manipulated. So, okay… maybe you personally won’t fall for false statistics – but 57% of people do!

Just in case you were wondering….

Yes, just in case you were wondering, the 57% statistic above was indeed just plucked from the air and made up on the spot!

See how easy it is!?

You get the point… Essentially, it’s up to you if you allow yourself to be swayed by claims such as 91% of our senior professional customers get offered the job of their dreams just a fortnight after buying our miracle CV.

Ultimately, it’s your choice whether you believe this kind of thing or you don’t – but if you do then just don’t be too surprised if this ideal new job doesn’t fall into your lap in double-quick time.

On a similar theme…

Do you believe all review sites?

Independent ones such as Trustpilot and Feefo etc are generally a good yardstick, but lo and behold, that’s not enough for the CV sector, and some “independent” specialist CV review websites have sprung up. You may think that is odd in itself? You might also ask yourself why would a company pay sizable sums to not only build such websites, but then additionally pay for expensive advertising to promote them?

The answer to such questions of course is usually very easy to decipher just by asking yourself another very simple question – who profits most from such sites?

Unsurprisingly, it’s the firm the “independent” review site gives rave reviews about while dissing their competitors (though not too much – that would be too suspect!)

Talking of suspect; if you try to check the owners of such websites on WhoIs then …you guessed it …they are hidden behind a secretive cloak of privacy!

Guaranteed jobs and interviews

Some firms even convince people that they can actually guarantee clients that their miracle CV will not only get them an interview and/or job, but they additionally frequently promise that it will do so in a short time period! Funnily enough, they tend not to say whether the job/interview is for a senior IT manager or a call centre tea lady, but some job/interview anyway is promised.

Not only this, but such firms tend not to discriminate against clients either. How great is that? So, whether you have just left school with no qualifications, you’ve just done a ten stretch in Wandsworth for fraud, or you’re looking to step up as CEO for a global blue-chip company then as long as you cough up enough of your hard earned cash then all and sundry is offered the holy grail of guaranteed career success.

Of course, such ‘guarantees’ tend not to mention, or get too bogged down with trivial little factors such the fact that employers make most of their decisions not on your actual CV, but on the things such as what you personally have done or achieved in your career, how well suited you are for their particular job, and the greatest unknown of all …how you match up against the inevitable stiff competition!

That’s the truth – you know it is. And as such, all a CV really can do is present your case. What no CV can do is guarantee that you are everything the employer is looking for (because you never know everything the employer is looking for) and what no CV can do is guarantee that you are more appealing to the employer than the competition (because you don’t know who the competition are)!

While the above is all very pertinent, it should also said that while any CV can’t guarantee you your target job (or even interviews for your target jobs), a genuinely outstanding CV can definitely boost your odds. And the very best companies (such as the ones with the honesty and integrity not to resort to spurious claims and false statistics) can dramatically boost the odds of their clients. As for the ones who need to resort to falsehoods and marketing gimmicks to persuade people… well you’ll just have to make your own mind up over them!

If you do put your hard-earned cash in the ‘guaranteed job/interview’ lottery then we wish you luck as you might need it! You may also wish to read any small print as you may find that the guarantee doesn’t actually mean your money back when the imminent job/interview doesn’t materialise. On the contrary, you may well find that the guarantee just involves rehashing the initial miracle CV – the very same one that they had promised you’d land the job and/or interview with in the first place!

Yes, it is indeed quite odd!
