PS Tip 59 : Personal statement opening lines

I’ve given you some ideas for getting started with your personal statement already, but it’s also worth considering precisely how you’ll write the opening lines. One thing that I would suggest you avoid is trite sentences such as ‘Ever since I was a child…’ or ‘I’ve always wanted to work as…’.

The funny thing is, it doesn’t even matter if what you’re saying is true – it will seem like you’re just saying what you think they want to hear.

A much better option for the opening lines of your statement would be to focus on what you do, or more accurately, what you will do if your application is successful. This avoids the need to use rehashed sentences, and also sets you apart from many of your competitors.
